Efficient & Effective Online Learning

A 7 Step Guide

The rise of the internet has brought many changes in and around us in the past decade. It has brought the world closer together. Live online education is one of those changes. Now, we can take online language tutorials sitting in the comfort of our home. Even beginners can speak fluently in Spanish or learn to play Guitar online sitting miles away from the academy. This has become a blessing for young students who are in their formative age - enthusiastic kids interested in learning languages online or learning Dance moves through interactive online classes.

In this wake of online live tutoring, few students and parents face issues - issues related to the attention span of kids, or the effectiveness of online learning, etc. There is a simple 7-step solution to all these problems. So let’s get right to it! Here’s the list of 7 essential steps that we recommend every student must follow for easy online education –

  1. Establish a good learning environment

A very important first step in online education is to have a conducive and comfortable environment. Usually, live online tutoring sessions go on for 1.5 to 2 hours. Accordingly, arrangements should be made. Our expert educators and tutors at WinQuest Online Academy have some suggestions for that!

    1. There should be proper seating arrangements for study. The seating should be comfortable enough to let the student study at ease, but should not be too comfortable which might induce sleep(!). A comfortable chair with a study table is ideal. Best to keep the sofa for Netflix nights!
    2. The room should be well-lit and quiet. Noisy environments tend to distract.
    3. The laptop should be kept at a comfortable distance and angle to prevent hurting the back and neck.
    4. The student should have some food before attending the lecture. Don’t let hunger distract you from what’s important! A mid-lecture snack is also not a good idea!
  2. Self-discipline and Schedule

Another very important point, Self-discipline, and a proper schedule help you stay in line with your priorities. If possible, schedule the classes at the time you feel you are most perceptive. Keep a specified schedule and dress up for the classes, as if you’re going to attend them in person. This helps you get into the mindset of learning before the actual session, which improves your grasping capability significantly. At our Institute, we always consider the convenience of our students while scheduling the classes.

Self-discipline is also important. Netflix and other distractions are best kept at a distance while learning! Read about self-discipline in this interesting article by Forbes here.

  3. Use of Technology!

Proper use of technology is very important in online learning. So make the best possible use of resources at hand. Use good quality headphones to listen during the live sessions. For live sessions, high-speed internet is also essential. If possible, stream sessions on widescreen, as it will help you focus and remove unnecessary distractions. Turn the notifications off, if possible, during your sessions.

  4. Interact with your mentor. Communicate!

This is by far the most important tip. Don’t let the screens distance you from your teacher. If you have a doubt, ask as you’d ask in a physical class.

Communication with peers is also important. Get in touch with other students during lectures or via groups on other platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. This helps you understand where do you stand in the crowd and the topics that other students face difficulties in.

At our academy, we design interactive online courses, where there is assured student-mentor dialogue. This has provided high skills to our students and satisfaction to their parents!

  5. Note-taking and Self-study

One of the most important steps! Just like for physical classes, self-study and note-taking are important for online classes.

Many students think that note-taking is unnecessary. Why bother when you can listen to recorded sessions again and again! But when it comes to revising an entire unit, it is always more convenient to go through self-made notes than listening to recorded lectures. A study published in 2014 showed that using pen and paper is much more effective than using the laptop for note-making. You can find its link here.

So while making notes, always remember, Pen is Mightier than Keyboard!

Self-study is the next step of note-taking. Self-study gives you confidence and puts you in the perspective of your work. You should make a schedule for self-study, that way you will never lag behind the instructor.

  6. Setting goals and objectives

This is the step after review. Set your goals and objectives based on what you lack, not based on others. Take advice from your mentor while deciding on your goals. Always try to break down a large objective into smaller manageable and specific pieces of work. They are easy to track and your mind tends to work best with them. That’s why Specificity is one of the core elements of Goal Setting Theory.

At our institution, we tailor-make the course according to the requirements of students. In it, we take care of goals and milestones. We believe in going ‘One Step at a Time.’

  7. Periodic Reviews and self-assessment

Review your progress from time to time. This helps you ensure that you are going in the right direction. The review also helps you analyze the progress you’ve made in the course.

We believe that self-assessments are the best way to optimize your performance. So along with our regular test-based assessments, we encourage students to self-evaluate and contact their mentors.

These are 7 important steps every student should follow for successful online learning. These steps are applicable for all types of online courses - be it for learning languages online, or learning how to dance online. The seven steps mentioned in this article are ubiquitous for all types of education.
